Image formats are tradeoffs, not rankings. JPG can be excellent for a photograph and poor for a transparent logo. PNG can preserve crisp interface details but create a needlessly large camera image. Separate master files from delivery files
A master file should preserve what you may need for later editing, while a delivery file should work well in its immediate destination. The two do not need to use the same format. Start each conversion from the best available master.
